Sustainability

The European Green Deal, launched in 2019, aims to make the European Union the world's first “climate-neutral bloc” by 2050.

The main Global warming objective from the Cop21/Paris Agreement in 2015 was to keep global warming at 1.5°C if possible, and lower than 2°C. To achieve this, emissions from human activity needs to be reduced.

Currently, construction contributes to around 40% of the global CO2 emissions. Steel production accounts for 7% of worldwide emission.

Objectives by 2050

  • The production and construction process must be highly resource-efficient. Low carbon solutions must not be an alternative, but rather the primary method of producing construction materials and carrying out construction projects.
  • Construction waste must be reduced as much as possible, in line with the principles of a circular economy, which should be widely accepted and applied.
  • Design for disassembly, reuse, recycling and upcycling should become the standard for structural elements at the end of a building’s life.

Building objectives

  • Buildings - both new and existing - must be highly energy efficient. They should have low (or even zero) energy demand, adequate insulation of the envelope, efficient ventilation, cooling and heating systems and energy management.
  • They should also be equipped with energy-generating facilities to make them energy positive.
  • The focus should not only be on reducing carbon emissions, but also on regenerative action, where the emphasis is both on reducing negative environmental impacts and on restoring them.

Energy objectives

  • Different sources of renewable energy should be used to the maximum possible extent.
  • To fully decarbonise, the building industry will need to undergo a profound transformation in order for the buildings and construction sector to achieve this vision and energy sources must become carbon neutral.

To achieve the zero emissions target, ArcelorMittal Construction is committed to making the necessary changes for a resource-efficient and carbon neutral production, with a focus on creating circular economies, clean energy and waste management strategies - as set out in our C5 Green Commitment.

Since 2015, we have been a key stakeholder in the not-for-profit organisation, ResponsibleSteel™. Focused on developing sustainable performance standards across the steel value chain, we work with 40+ members and associates from companies and civil society organisations across the world.

The key aim of ResponsibleSteel™ is to develop standards, certifications and related tools to ensure the responsible sourcing, production and recycling of steel is more sustainable.

ArcelorMittal Construction and The C5 Green Commitment

Under the terms of the EU Green Deal to reduce of 55% the Co2 eq emission by 2030, to be carbon neutral by 2050 and to limitate the temperature increase (1.5/2°c), the construction industry needs to focus on creating circular economies, generating clean energy and minimising construction waste.

The C5 Green Commitment is our roadmap to carbon neutrality. As part of this, not only are we making our steels, products and solutions more sustainable, but we’re also addressing sustainability from the inside out.

We are adopting a clean energy approach across our sites, focusing on sustainable initiatives through our XCarb® brand and addressing carbon emissions from our fleet by moving to electric vehicles.

Our C5 Green Commitment action plan sets out our commitment to be compliant with the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the UN by:

  • Reducing construction waste and creating circular economies.
  • Ensuring disassembly, reuse, recycling and upcycling becomes standard at the end of a building’s life.
  • Ensuring new and existing buildings are energy efficient and also regenerative.
  • Maximising alternative sources of renewable energy and use products and solutions that are carbon neutral.
